GMDA’s ₹52 Crore Road Upgrade Could Change Daily Travel in Gurugram
Gurugram continues to witness rapid urban growth. New residential projects, office spaces, and commercial hubs have transformed the city over the last decade. However, traffic congestion, damaged roads, and waterlogging still create major problems for residents. Now, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has taken a significant step toward solving these issues.
GMDA has sent a proposal to the Haryana government for a ₹52 crore road repair and upgradation project connecting Basai Chowk near the Dwarka Expressway to IFFCO Chowk through Old Gurugram. Officials expect the project to improve daily commuting, strengthen connectivity, and reduce monsoon-related flooding across several areas.
The proposed road stretch covers around 9.5 kilometres and connects some of the busiest roads in the city. Once completed, the project can improve traffic flow between the Dwarka Expressway and the Delhi-Jaipur Highway significantly.
Key Roads Included in the Project
The proposed upgrade includes two major stretches in Old Gurugram.
The first stretch runs from Basai Chowk to Old Railway Road through Basai Road. Meanwhile, the second stretch extends from Old Railway Road to IFFCO Chowk through Maharaja Agrasen Chowk, Mahavir Chowk, MG Road, and Maharana Pratap Chowk.
These roads handle heavy daily traffic because they connect residential colonies, marketplaces, office areas, and important highway routes. Unfortunately, poor road conditions and increasing vehicle pressure often slow down movement across the corridor.
Therefore, GMDA plans to reconstruct and relay damaged road sections completely. The authority also wants to improve pedestrian infrastructure and drainage systems along the route.
Officials confirmed that the roads also provide direct connectivity to the Dwarka Expressway through the Basai flyover. As a result, the project may become a major relief for commuters travelling between Old Gurugram and newer sectors.
Stormwater Drains to Solve Waterlogging Issues
Waterlogging remains one of the biggest concerns in several parts of Old Gurugram. During the monsoon season, roads near Basai Road often become heavily flooded. Consequently, residents face traffic jams, damaged vehicles, and unsafe road conditions.
To address this issue, GMDA has allocated nearly ₹20 crore for the Basai Chowk to Old Railway Road stretch. Apart from road relaying work, the authority plans to build modern stormwater drains and proper footpaths.
Officials stated that around 20 residential colonies along this corridor suffer during heavy rainfall every year. Therefore, the drainage infrastructure forms a critical part of the project.
Better drainage can prevent water accumulation on roads and improve vehicle movement during monsoon months. Additionally, it can help protect road surfaces from rapid deterioration caused by standing water.
Residents have demanded permanent drainage solutions for years. Hence, this project may finally provide long-term relief to affected areas.
Smoother Traffic Flow Expected Across the City
Traffic congestion has become a daily struggle for thousands of commuters in Gurugram. Narrow roads, damaged stretches, illegal parking, and increasing vehicle numbers often create long traffic snarls across Old Gurugram.
The upcoming GMDA project aims to improve intra-city traffic movement substantially.
The authority has proposed ₹32 crore for reconstruction and relaying work between Old Railway Road and IFFCO Chowk. Once completed, the improved corridor can reduce congestion and support smoother vehicle movement between NH-48 and the Dwarka Expressway.
Moreover, commuters may gain an alternative route for travelling across different parts of the city. This improvement can reduce pressure on already crowded roads nearby.
