GMDA Launches Major Anti-Encroachment Drive in Gurugram
Gurugram continues to grow at a rapid pace. New residential sectors, commercial hubs, and infrastructure projects are transforming the city every year. However, illegal encroachments on roads, green belts, and public land have also become a major concern for residents and authorities alike. To address this issue, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) recently carried out a large-scale anti-encroachment drive across several important sector-dividing roads. The enforcement teams removed illegal shops, unauthorised ramps, temporary kiosks, roadside structures, and encroaching gates from multiple stretches of the city.
The drive mainly covered Sector Roads 50-57, 51-57, and 90-91. Officials stated that the operation aimed to restore the right of way (ROW), improve road accessibility, and reduce traffic congestion.
Moreover, GMDA confirmed that strict enforcement action will continue in the coming weeks as well.
Illegal Shops, Gates, and Structures Demolished
The enforcement drive witnessed strong action from GMDA officials. During the operation, teams demolished around 15 illegal shops constructed on the multi-utility corridor in Sector 90.
Apart from that, authorities also removed:
- Illegal roadside kiosks
- Temporary commercial setups
- Encroaching ramps
- Unauthorised gates
- Roadside carts and shanties
- Parking extensions on public land
These illegal occupations had gradually reduced road space and created serious inconvenience for commuters.
In several locations, residents and commercial establishments had extended their boundaries onto service roads and green belts. Consequently, vehicle movement became difficult, especially during peak traffic hours.
Therefore, GMDA decided to restore public spaces and clear all unauthorised structures from these stretches.
The drive was led by RS Bhath, nodal officer for encroachment and DTP GMDA, along with officials from the Infra 1 division and the enforcement wing.
Nearly Two Kilometres of Encroached Stretches Cleared
One of the most significant achievements of the operation involved the large-scale clearance of encroached roads.
According to officials:
- Nearly 1.5 kilometres of encroached stretch along Sector Road 51-57 was cleared.
- Around 600 metres along Sector Road 50-57 became free from illegal occupation.
- Approximately 1.5 kilometres along Sector Road 90-91 underwent inspection and partial clearance.
This massive clearance is expected to improve traffic flow considerably.
Earlier, these stretches suffered from bottlenecks because roadside encroachments reduced the usable width of roads and service lanes. However, after the operation, commuters may experience smoother movement and better accessibility.
Additionally, emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire brigades will now find it easier to move through these roads during critical situations.
GMDA Focuses on Protecting Green Belts
Interestingly, GMDA did not limit the operation to roads alone. The authority also focused heavily on protecting green belts and public spaces.
Over time, several businesses and residents had started misusing green belts for parking and commercial purposes. Some establishments even installed tiles over green patches to create unofficial parking areas.
As a result, these green zones lost their original purpose and visual appeal.
During the drive, officials removed illegal carts, kiosks, and temporary structures from these areas. Furthermore, GMDA directed private entities to remove tiles installed on green belts within five days.
Authorities also instructed residents and commercial establishments to use designated stilt parking spaces instead of occupying public land.
This move will help preserve greenery while promoting planned urban development.
Moreover, cleaner green belts can improve both environmental quality and the overall appearance of the city.
Another Round of Action Scheduled Before June 7
Although GMDA cleared several encroachments during this drive, officials admitted that some illegal structures still remain along the Sector 90-91 stretch.
Therefore, the authority has already planned another round of enforcement action before June 7.
Officials identified additional unauthorised commercial extensions, temporary roadside setups, and encroaching structures during the inspection. Consequently, more demolition and clearance operations are expected in the coming days.
GMDA officials also stated that regular monitoring will continue to prevent re-encroachment after the drive.
This step is important because illegal structures often return if enforcement weakens over time.
Hence, continuous inspections and strict penalties may become necessary to maintain these cleared stretches permanently.
How Residents Will Benefit From This Drive
The anti-encroachment operation can bring several long-term benefits for Gurugram residents.
Firstly, wider and obstruction-free roads will improve daily traffic movement. Secondly, pedestrians will receive safer walking spaces along service lanes and green belts.
Furthermore, cleaner public areas can significantly improve the city’s visual appeal.
Illegal roadside structures often create hygiene issues, traffic chaos, and parking problems. However, after this clearance drive, residents may witness better urban management in these sectors.
The operation can also strengthen property values in nearby residential areas. Buyers and investors generally prefer locations with organised infrastructure, proper road access, and cleaner surroundings.
Therefore, this drive may positively impact both infrastructure quality and real estate confidence.
Real Estate Experts Welcome GMDA’s Action

Sanjeev Singh, MD of SKJ Landbase, said:
Gurugram is developing rapidly, and maintaining planned infrastructure has become extremely important. Strong action against encroachments helps improve road connectivity, protects public spaces, and increases the overall livability of the city. Such enforcement also creates greater confidence among homebuyers and investors.
His statement highlights how organised infrastructure directly supports sustainable urban growth.
Gurugram Moves Towards Smarter Urban Planning
Gurugram is steadily evolving into a modern urban destination. Massive infrastructure upgrades, expanding road networks, and new real estate developments continue reshaping the city’s future.
However, illegal encroachments can slow down this progress significantly.
Therefore, consistent enforcement action remains essential for maintaining urban discipline and protecting public infrastructure.
GMDA’s latest anti-encroachment drive clearly reflects the authority’s commitment toward cleaner roads, better traffic management, and organised city planning.
If such operations continue regularly, Gurugram residents may soon experience safer roads, improved public spaces, and a more structured urban environment across the city.
