This advanced system will soon replace the old practice where workers manually switched streetlights on and off across different parts of the city.

The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG), along with the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), is implementing this initiative. Officials believe the upgrade will significantly improve the management of the city’s lighting infrastructure.

Currently, Gurugram has around 1.12 lakh streetlights installed along highways, internal sector roads, residential areas, and public spaces. However, a large portion of these lights still depends on manual operations. Therefore, authorities decided to introduce a smarter and more efficient system.

As the project progresses, Gurugram residents can expect better road visibility, improved safety, and more efficient power usage.

How the Centralised Streetlight System Works

The Centralised Control and Monitoring System allows officials to operate and monitor streetlights remotely through a digital platform. Instead of sending workers to manually switch lights on or off, operators can manage the entire network from a control centre.

The technology works through special control panels installed at different locations across the city. Each panel manages a group of streetlights within a specific area. Once connected, officials can control multiple lights simultaneously. They can also schedule automatic switching based on sunset and sunrise timings. As a result, the system ensures that lights operate only when required.

Moreover, the platform continuously monitors electricity consumption and lighting performance. If a streetlight stops working, the system immediately sends an alert. Maintenance teams can then address the issue quickly.

Authorities have already taken the first steps toward implementing the new system. Out of the 1.12 lakh streetlights in Gurugram, about 20,000 lights are currently connected to the CCMS network.

These lights operate through 798 control panels installed across different sectors and road networks.

However, the city plans to expand the system significantly. Officials have approved the installation of around 500 additional CCMS panels. Once installed, these new panels will connect nearly 50,000 more streetlights to the centralised system. This expansion will bring a large portion of Gurugram’s lighting network under automated monitoring.

According to officials, the tender process for installing these panels has already started. Work on the project will begin soon after the final approvals and contractor selection.
