GMDA Cracks Down on Unauthorized Constructions in Gurgaon, Issues 72 Notices

GMDA issues 72 notices for illegal constructions in Gurgaon

Gurgaon is also seeing a stern push towards reinstating order and enhancing urban infrastructure, as the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) steps up against unauthorized developments in the city. In a recent big-ticket operation, the GMDA has served a total of 72 official notices to violators engaged in illegal construction works and unauthorized road access changes in various busy sectors of the city.

The advisories are part of a broader campaign to recover public road space and facilitate traffic flow on the master roads of the city. Areas under the focus of the crackdown are Sectors 47, 49, 50, 51, and 57—places which have been suffering from increasing encroachments and increasing traffic congestion in the last few years.

48 notices were issued to businesses and individuals who had encroached upon public land by setting up temporary establishments like roadside stalls, tin-shedding, plant nurseries, and building material shops. These illegal establishments were discovered to be taking up the 30-meter-wide right of way (ROW), legally set aside for road infrastructure and public movement.

An additional 24 homeowners were identified as creating unauthorized access points, like illicit driveways and entrances, which directly accessed master roads. Not only do such unauthorized accessways interfere with the free movement of traffic but also present dangerous safety risks for commuters and pedestrians.

The GMDA’s action covered two lengthy road stretches crucial to Gurgaon’s daily commute. One is a 2.3-kilometer stretch from Sohna Road to Mayfield Garden, while the other stretches from Baani Square on Golf Course Road to Golf Course Extension Road—both of which have a high amount of traffic each day, particularly during peak hours.

Residents from nearby housing communities such as Malibu Towne, South City 2, Nirvana Country, Sispal Vihar, and Mayfield Garden have for long complained about deteriorating traffic conditions due to roadside hindrances. Most of them welcomed the addition of GMDA’s initiative, saying the enforcement was much needed and overdue to restore order and ensure road safety.

All violators have been served a stern seven-day notice by GMDA officials to voluntarily demolish the illegal constructions and correct unauthorized entry points on their own. In case of non-compliance, direct action such as demolition and legal action will be initiated.

A high-ranking GMDA official reiterated the agency’s zero-tolerance approach to encroachments and illegal construction, pointing out that such actions are against planning norms and dilute the quality of public infrastructure. The agency is also studying long-term proposals to build dedicated service roads along these sections, which would again help decongest main roads and organize local traffic.

This measure is not a stand-alone gesture but part of a comprehensive urban renewal plan to enhance Gurgaon’s infrastructure, enforce proper use of land, and make city streets safer and more efficient for everybody on the road.

With the city growing at a fast pace and real estate projects extending their limits, the GMDA’s action serves as a timely reminder of how necessary it is to adhere to correct regulatory procedures. There will be more such drives in the months to come, as authorities try to balance the growth of the city and legal development.
